TERMS of the agreement on wages

and conditions of all operating and ancillary grades of British Road Services, have been published by the Transport and General Workers' Union.

Under the new agreement, the minimum Wage rates contained in R.H. 134) will be increased by 7s. a week, as proposed in R.H.(35). In addition, workers in rural areas will, receive a further 4s. a week as a result of the abolition by the Road Haulage r xerltive of Grade 2 rates.

• Improved terms for overtime have been agreed. After the first six hours of overtime at time-and-a-quarter, all hours worked on week-days will be paid for at time-and-a-half. Sunday work will continue to be paid for at double rates.

The 44-hour guaranteed week will be scheduled between midnight on Sunday and 12.30 p.m. on Saturday, so that all hours worked after that time on Saturday will be paid for at overtime rates.

The national agreement for maintenance and repair grades provides that for adult workers in .the London area, the skilled rate shall he 3s, Old. an hour; semi-skilled (I) 2s. 91d.; semi-skilled (2) 2s. 71d.; and unskilled 2s. 6d. In the provinces, each rate is reduced by 11d. an hour. Additional amounts can be paid for merit or proficiency. Workers are afforded a 44-hour guaranteed Week, two weeks' annual holiday with pay, payment for statutory holidays, and a special rate of time-and-one-fifth for night work.

"The apreement can be regarded as a very satisfactory conclusion to our negotiat,ons with the R.H.E.," states the Union.

B.R.S. CHARGES UP A CCORDING to the " Daily 1-1 Express," the British Bolt, Nut, Screw and Rivet Conference, wh:ch represents 120 manufacturers, has drawn up a schedule of comparative costs of transport by free hauliers, British Road Services and the. railways. A table shows that in all cases the B.R.S. rates are higher than those of free hauliers and in some instances are much greater than the railway charges. Typical charges for named destinations show that those of EMS, are 333, 49.7, 110, 108 and 97 per cent. above those of independent hauliers.
