Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

in the Tyne Tunnels toll is to go ahead next year after plans to change the charging framework received approval last week (25 July).

The cost for LGVs will rise to £3.20 on 1 January 2014, while plans to charge vans greater than 3m in height the same rate as trucks were also given the green light.

Smaller vans will be charged £1.60, the same rate as cars.

Paul Fenwick, New Tyne Crossing project director, told CM that the £3.20 toll was set in 2007 when the Tyne and Wear Integrated Transport Authority (TWITA), the local council committee that manages the tolls, appointed TT2 to maintain the new tunnels.

Fenwick said TWITA felt that the £3.20 charge was too much to introduce straight away, so it decided to increase the toll gradually.

He also confirmed that 2014 would be the last planned rise, other than increases due to inflation.

The price for LGVs stands at £2.50, following an increase from £2 in January 2013.
