• Supermarket giant Asda claims to have cut its distribution costs to below 3% of turnover — and it plans to reduce them further by offering a back-load service to suppliers in the same areas that it collects from, and by running productivity deals at its depots.
Asda has also secured several no-strike deals at its depots, according to distribution and logistics director John Galloway.
He says the company has persuaded trade unions to accept Saturday and Sunday as normal working days.
Asda's distribution is a mixture of own-account and thirdparty including a contract with Christian Salvesen.
