-IE GREAT SURGE of patriotic pride which Britain
;perienced this week should not be allowed to subside in the Inds of time. It should be trapped and used. We must stop migrating ourselves and believe in our abilities again. The world is well-populated with British engineers. Our .ganisational ability and management methods have been ;ed to establish and build companies worldwide.
In transport terms we have provided the pattern which hers have emulated and will continue to do so.
Our C & U regulations, operators' licensing, the CPC tests, rong trade associations, have all been copied elsewhere, We !t the precedent, others followed.
Now a danger looms. Europe set the pattern for the use and use of tachograph regulations. Breaches of that law are now immonplace on mainland Europe, we should not follow their :ample.
All too soon UK operators will be faced with the tachograph gulations, but they must be prepared to operate them to the tter.
There will almost certainly be cries from many quarters that e French, Germans and Italians operate in breach of the law. tat is no reason why we should follow suit. It is much more iportant that we take them to the European Court if WQ can ove that their enforcement officers are ignoring breaches of e law. They took us there on the tachograph issue in 1978. We must stamp our authority on ropean transport affairs.
precept and example we can iprove things for all )ncerned.
