It comes after two or three years of ; vast amount of publicity about transport am road safety. One would expect a local authorit, to give a lead in such matters, or at least, no fall behind.
The LA criticized a -really deplorable picture of maintenance in a council depart ment and said he would not be doing his dut to the public if he let the matter go withou penalty.
Mr. J. Paton, assistant county clerk. sail that these vehicles were part of the council' 14-vehicle C—licensed fleet and that if th licence was revoked or suspended it would b unable to carry out departmental functionE This would be of detriment to the public. h said.
Mr. Paton continued by saying that admin istrative problems had caused the council t set up a sub-committee to investigate th running of the maintenance depa.rtmen. The appointment of a transport officer an another two mechanics was under considerz tion.
"This is the first time the council ha appeared in a case of this nature and it wi not happen again-, he told the LA,
The LA reminded Mr. Paton that a cons( quence of this decision was that should th council wish to increase its number of vehicle: the grant would no longer be automatic bt subject to discretion.
