• Leading figures in the transport world will be taking part in the first national conference of the Freight Transport Association, which is to be held at Eastbourne from October 29 to November 1 this year.
The conference will follow the pattern established by the TRTA but the scope has been widened to cover the user as well as the field of transport operation.
Following a forward-looking address by the president, NFC chairman Sir Reginald Wilson will speak on -The current transport scene" and particularly the role of the National Freight Corporation. He will be followed by Mr. S. C. Robbins, executive director (freight) BRB, on "Railway freight services—present and future", and the first day will be wound up with a session devoted to vehicle weighing and the problems of overloading.
The second day will be opened by Mr. P. Stott, GLC traffic commissioner and director of transportation, speaking on "Goods vehicles and urban traffic mangement". The second session will centre on a paper "Operators licensing" by Mr. G. Elliott, traffic manager, Alcan Industries Ltd. In the afternoon Mr. H. Urwin, TGWU assistant secretary, will open a session devoted to drivers' wages and productivity: taking part will be Mr. K. Jackson, national secretary of the road transport commercial group of the TGWU, and Mr. W. T, Fairbairn, distribution manager. Scottish and Newcastle Breweries Ltd.
