• Drivers from six depots of the Yorkshirebased bulk liquid haulage firm of Harold Wood and Sons Ltd. launched the company's first driving competition on Sunday. The venue at Birkenshaw was provided by the West Riding County Fire Service and although a little more space would have been welcome, the parade square was so utilized that spectators could see everything that was happening.
The tests were laid out in the same way as at CM LDoY contests although the restricted space made some of them more difficult because the vehicles could not be positioned correctly for starting off. For instance, the width-judging test requires an artic to take up an unfolded, oblique starting position in order to gain fullest advantage. At Birkenshaw this was impossible and every competitor driving an artic had to start off with the unit folded at about 70 deg.
Depots taking part were Heckmondwike, Widnes. Basildon, Hull. Stockton and Whitehaven, each putting forward six men, two in each of the three classes chosen. Wood's provided the machines for the tests; class A, 30-32 ton artics (AEC Mandator), class B, 24-26 ton rigids (ER F 24 ton eight-wheeler) and class C (Seddon 14 ton four-wheeler).
