Impact wrenches

NEW range of high precision tools suitable for use in the automotive industries has been introduced by Algin Motors (Export) Ltd. Of specific interest to operators of commercial vehicles are two impact wrenches—one with a straight head, the other with an angled head.

The straight-head unit, model No. NW32L, has an inch square shank, a torque output of 1,400 lb.ft. and a maximum bolt capacity of 1.25 in. It has been designed for such jobs as wheel-nut removal and is claimed to cut the time involved by up to 70 per cent.

Bearing model No. NWA19, the angle-headed unit is of the same capacity; it measures only 6in. across the head and is particularly suitable for Use in restricted positions such as those of axle U-bolts and spring shackles.

The high cost of many comparable tools of this kind has prevented' many small shops from using them. The simplicity of design and up-to-date production methods have enabled the makers to market products at up to 30 per cent below the price of competitive makes.

Another not unimportant service offered by Algin Exports is the after-sales repair service. A machine posted to the company will be returned with the repair completed within 24 hours.

Fuel-pump test bench

THE latest addition to the range of fuel-pump test benches made by the Merlin Engineering Co. Ltd. is a model incorporating a new electro-hydraulic drive which facilitates the use of a more sturdy and powerful motor rated at 5 h.p.

The larger motor gives adequate power and produces high torque at 50 r.p.m., enabling accurate idling checks to be performed. Two infinitely variable-speed drive ranges from 0 to 1,000, and from 0 to 4,000 r.p.m. are selected through a three-position clutch; there is also a neutral position for static pressure checks.

Fuel feed is by a reversible dual-purpose gear-pump with a capacity of 4,000 c.c. per minute at predetermined pressures of up to 500 p.s.i. A four-filter pre-lubrication unit provides adequate clean test oil in all conditions. Merlin instant high-pressure phasing is fitted as standard with simplified recording on a graduated ring equipped with a vernier. Electroscopic phasing is available if required.

Other features of the unit are a controlled pressure for gallery leak tests; an automatic trip control giving 100 and 100X injections and a large tachometer with a reverse box calibrated over 270° from 0 to 4,500 r.p.m. All the usual equipment is included in the specification and the machine is designed to handle all A-, AA-, Band N-type pumps as well as flange-mounted and distributor types.

New chart and adhesives

THE 3M Company has published a guide and selection chart covering its complete range of sealers and adhesives. The chart shows clearly the correct type of material that should be used for each individual type of job and the method of application.

The company has also announced the addition of two new adhesives to its range. They are 3M Spray Trim adhesive and 3M Super Weatherstrip adhesive. Spray Trim is a high-solids material used for bonding all types of trim, including foam-backed headliners, and is sold in 18oz. aerosol cans. Super Weatherstrip has been reformulated as a fast-drying, high-strength and high-heat-resisting adhesive and is particularly suitable for bonding vulcanized rubbers.

Fast Tack adhesive—an all-purpose, light-coloured material claimed to give high strength in 15 sec.—is now available in quart and gallon sizes in addition to the 8oz. gun kit.
