Alfred Vincent Rigby, transport manager for Morecambe and Heysham Corporation, will in early June move to Chesterfield to become manager of the Corporation transport department in succession to Albert Burrows, who has been appointed general manager of Liverpool Corporation Transport.
W. J. Ralph has been appointed general manager of Bulwark Transport Ltd.; L. J. Stamp general manager of H. and W. Tankers Ltd.; and C. G. Kuhle general manager of Bulwark Contracts Ltd. All the appointments follow the retirement of C. Exell as general manager of these companies. Mr. Exell remains on the respective boards.
R. G. Stockman has been elected chairman of the Thames Valley area, London and Home Counties Division, of the TRTA, with D. P. MacDonald, L. J. Wilkins, A. L. Taylor and J. L. Ilozward as vice-chairmen. In the North of Scotland area, Scottish Division, R. Lawson, jnrhas been elected chairman, with R. Nairn as vice-chairman.
Sir Donald Stokes, deputy chairman and managing director of Leyland Motor Corporation and chairman of Standard-Triumph International, has been given one of the 12 Ambassador Awards for Achievement, presented by The Ambassador export magazine. His citation reads: ". . . for his engineering and design leadership in Britain's motor industry; for his personal drive in piloting Standard-Triumph and Leyland vehicles on highly competitive roads."
At the a.g.m. of the North Devon sub area of the Devon and Cornwall area of the RHA, J. Baker was elected chairman for the ensuing year, with R. Forward as vice-chairman. In the Honiton sub-area, F. J. Perry was elected chairman, with G. Hansford as vice-chairman. In the Newton Abbot and Torbay sub-area, L. G. Valiance was elected chairman, with J. R. Eggbeer as vicechairman.
To mark the end of his chairmanship of the RHA's international group since 1958, J. A. Murly was presented with a gift by members of the group in London on Tuesday. In his closing annual report he announced a group membership of 73 (12 up on last year) and said that 1,695 TIR carnets had been issued by the RHA in 1965. At the meeting, G. C. Ames, transport manager of Evan Cook Ltd., was elected to succeed John Murly as chairman. J. Milloy, formerly technical assistant (design) to the chief engineer of Leyland Motors Ltd., has been appointed engineering manager at Albion Motors Ltd. Mr. Milloy joined Leyland in 1943 as a draughtsman.
A. C. Macdonald, formerly regional manager of the Leyland Group, has been appointed Midland divisional manager.
John C. Kerans has been appointed European sales manager for Sea-Land Service Inc. A pioneer in the land-sea-land transport of containerized freight, Sea-Land currently operates a fleet of more than 12,000 container trailers and 19 ships serving the United States, Alaska and the Caribbean. The service will be extended to Europe on April 23 with the inauguration of a New York-Rotterdam run. Mr. Kerans will head the Sea-Land office in Rotterdam. He will also be responsible for co-ordinating the sales efforts of Sea-Land agents in Belgium and The Netherlands (Furness Shipping and Agency Co.), in the UK (Ferrymasters Ltd.) and in Germany (VTGVereinigte Tanklager Und Transportmittel GmbH), John Armitage has been appointed branch manager of the North Western contracts branch of British Road Services Ltd. Mr. Armitage was formerly branch manager at the BRS general haulage branch at Warrington, a post he had held since September 1961.
National officers elected at the national meeting of the Transport Managers' Club for 1966-7 were H. T. Duffield, president; W. Lloyd, chairman; W. J. Irons, secretary: and C. Clark, treasurer.
At a meeting of the Darlington sub-area of the Northern area of the RHA, J. Dawson was elected chairman for the ensuing year, with G. Stiller and J. Stirk as vice-chairmen. S. Spink, J. B. Archer and F. Simmons were elected representatives to the area committee.
At last week's a.g.m. of the East Midland area of the RHA, J. E. Kirby was elected chairman.
J. Richardson has been elected chairman of the committee for the South-eastern Centre of the IRTE, with J. C. Miller as vice-chairman.
F. Keir has been elected chairman of the North-eastern area, Northern Division of the TRTA, for the ensuing year, with E. Mordue and J. A. C. Thwaites as vice-chairmen. In the Sheffield and South Yorkshire area of the Yorkshire Division, A. Utley has been elected chairman, with W. S. F. Glover and W. Dawson as vice-chairmen. In the Merseyside and North Wales area of the North Western, Merseyside and North Wales Division, T. Williams has been elected chairman, with G. Wilmshurst as vice-chairman.
