Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AA TEMPERATE, " middle-of-theroad " policy was important in the control of the Association's affairs at the present time, Mr. R. G. Crowther, a national vice-chairman of the Road Haulage Association, told members of the Western Area last week. He was speaking at the area annual dinner at Bristol.

The real -success of the Association's negotiations over denationalization could not always be publicized, he said. He urged members to buy transport units and take over the traffic from British Road Services, after which the R.H.A. could meet the railways and B.R.S. and try to e.nter into arrangements to maintain fair rates. He spoke of the "closest co-operation" with B.R.S.

Although the Association . were opposed to tolls, the national council had agreed that, if the construction of the Severn Bridge could be accelerated by such a system, the Western Area should make the decision whether it should be accepted or not.

Aid. Gilbert G. Adams,111J.P., Lord Mayor of Bristol. said that the bridge was urgently needed and that Bristolians were not satisfied with the Governmenes reply to their representations. Urging the need for giving top priority to road construction, he suggested that the possibility of converting canals into motor roads should be investigated.

Mr. T. D. Corpe said that few prenationalitation operators in the Western Area were coming back into the industry; Capt. G. A. P. Upston, chairman, said that hauliers in the area were concerned particularly with short-distance work.

LORRIES HAD IDENTICAL LICENCES

WHEN two lorries belonging to TV Newbould and Dewhirst, Ltd., were stopped by the police in different places on the same date, it was found that they had identical Excise licences and number plates. This was stated at Sheffield Quarter Sessions last week, when Harold Smith, Carlby Road. Sheffield, a director, with interests in two Sheffield haulage concerns, pleaded not guilty to making a false declaration in an application for a Road Fund licence.

After an extended hearing, the jury failed to agree, and the case will go before a new jury at the next sessions.

BRITISH DELEGATION TO SEE MOTORWAYS

LATER this month a British delegation, organized by the British Road Federation, will visit Holland, Belgium and Western Germany to study the part that modern roads can play in the national economy. Particular attention will be given to progress in engineering, lay-out and construction.
