ROADWAYS TRUST NOT FAVOURED.

:A

A PROPOSED scheme to co-ordinate all road-transport operators in this country in a Roadways Trust was rejected at a meeting of the East Midlands Area branch of A.R.O. held in Nottingham, last week.

About 20 hauliers from Derby were present, and operators also attended from Nottingham, Leicester, Northampton, Worksop, Oxford, Mansfield and Newark.

After hearing Mr. Reginald Hindley. of Manchester, the originator 'Of the scheme, explain its provisions, the meeting passed a resolution stating that it did not recommend the scheme, and considered it " would be selling our liberty and heritage as well as the control of our businesses to a financial interest."

Outlining the scheme, Mr. Hindley said he hoped to live to see the time when peop:e bought road stock as they now bought rail stock. There were, he said 30,000 concerns associated with the haulage business in the country, and except in a few cases, they were not connected in any way. He answered a number of questions dealing with various aspects of the scheme.

Mr. J. A. Kirby, chairman of the area branch of the Association, who presided, said that theirs was the third largest industry in the country. Hauliers, he declared, were not satisfied with their present position and, in some directions, they had cause to feel alarm.

" The privileged railways," he said, " have only to prove adequate facilities and no haulier is wanted."

Mr. J. T. Pepper, of Nottingham. opposing the scheme, said that members of the Association were greatly perturbed at the attitude of headquarters in backing the scheme. They had given it their blessing. he declared, without authority from the rank and file. He urged the retention of the individual business.

Eastern, Not Southern.

Mr. A. Porter. A.I.T.A., who took the chair on the occasion of a special address given by S.T.R., our costs expert, to the Norwich Traffic Club, is connected with Eastern Roadways. Ltd.. and not Southern Roadways as mentioned in our report last week.
