Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The Northern Licensing Authority at Newcastle, last week, deferred decision in an application by J. M. Burgess, Ltd., of North Shields, for permission to add another four vehicles to its fleet. The company carries fish to Manchester and other provincial centres from North Shields.

Mr. Wright, a North Shields fish importer, said the railway facilities for fish traffic were totally inadequate, and it would be a bad thing for the railway company to have the monopoly.

Mr. Hodgson' for the L.N.E.R. objecting, said it was not trying to stop the company's business. The railway was not asking for monopoly.

The case for the applicants was submitted by Mr, T. H. Campbell Wardlaw and Mr. F. Milton, Northern secretary, A.R.O.

Eighth International Road Congress.

The Eighth Road Congress, arranged by the Permanent International Association of Road Congresses, will take place at the Kurhaus, Scheveningen, Holland, from June 20 to 25. A number of one-day tours will be arranged to take place after the conclusion of the Congress meetings, and the closing session will actually be on July 2, The secretary is Mr. L. Van de Kasteele, 60, Groot-Hertoginnelaan, The Hague.

Guy's Good Turnover.

An increase of 33k per cent, in cash turnover for the first nine months of the current financial year, as compared with the same period of the previous year, is reported by Guy Motors, Ltd., Fallings Park, Wolverhampton. There has been a considerable increase in the number of orders for fleets of vehicles for some of the largest operators in the country.

London Council's Suggested • Trailer Ban.

For some months, Stepney Borough Council has been agitating for the abolishment of the use of trailers in the City and Metropolitan traffic areas of London. „ Now, St. Pancras Council has advised the Stepney authorities that, as the question is one of general application to London, it should be referred for consideration to the Metrapolitan Boroughs' Standing Joint Committee.

Good Support, but Further Vehicles Refused.

Sir John Maxwell, Northern Licensing Authority, rejected, last week, the application by A. Bell (Newcastle), Ltd., for permission to operate another nine vehicles. The case was heard in January and was opposed by the L.N.E.R., Hay's Wharf Cartage Co., and the United Automobile Services, Ltd.

Sir John agreed that there was undotibtedly considerable evidence in support of the applicant's claim, that trade and industry locally had increased and that the businesses of certain of B22 its regular customers had increased. Nevertheless, he had found there was no case for the authorization of extra vehicles either for general goods traffic, for the London service, or for furniture removals.

Price of Fordson 5-cwt. Van.

As from Monday last, the price of the Fordson 5-cwt. van has been fixed at £115. We recently road-tested this van and published a report of its performance in our issue dated March 25 last.

Super Road for Yorks and Lancs.

, Operators of commercial vehicles are interested in the project of the Ministry of Transport to improve the Liverpool —Preston—Leeds trunk road. An inquiry was held recently into the proposals to construct by-passes at Otley,, Barley-in-Wharfedale, Addingham, Skipton and Gisburn, and to make diversions at points along the existing road between Leeds and the Lancashire boundary.

With the exception of a short stretch near Otley, the proposed road will have a standard width of 120 ft. with dual carriageways, each 22 ft. wide, on either side of a central reservation space of 26 ft.

Brake Tests of Many Nations.

All persons interested in the subject of braking should obtain a copy ofa pamphlet recently published by Messrs. Tapley and Co., Totton, Southampton. Its contents are described by its title— Regulations Respecting Brakes on Motor Vehicles and Methods of Testing Such Brakes in Different Countries. The practices of 20 nations are described, and this must surely render the booklet a unique compendium, with considerable value. In addition there are notes on carrying out reliable brake tests.

The administration offices of the German Railways Information Bureati have been moved to 18-19, Pall Mall, London, S.W.1. " "FAIR PLAY FROM M.o.T." WANTED.

Speaking at the annual dinner of Northern Motor Utilities, Ltd., in York, last week, Mr. A. E. Hewitt, chairman of the company, asked for a wages agreement to oe enforceable all round. He said they would welcome a rates structure, and appealed for fair play from their competitors and the Ministry of Transport.

" When considering the recent tradeunion demands on this inclustry,'', he said, " the directors are perfectly conscious that the claim of drivers of large vehicles is a thing which is not unreasonable. . . . They go out on, slippery roads in dreadful weather and carry out a great responsibility for which we owe a great deal to them."

Mr. Hewitt also raised the question of taxation, and, in conclusion, lie revealed that the company had 340 vehicles and employed 650 people. It paid £13,000 in road licences per year, £12,000 in insurance and £21,000 in petrol and oil taxes. The mileage of the fleet was 6,500.000 a year.

Manchester Chamber's Transport Section.

Meetings have recently been held in connection with the proposed formation of a road transport section of the Manchester Chamber of Commerce, and it is understood that the project is likely to materialize in the near future.

Glasgow International Engineering Congress.

In connection with the Empire Exhibition in Scotland, an Inter-. national Engineering Congress will be held at Glasgow from June 21 to 24, open to members of any recognized technical society on payment of a fee of £2 5s. to cover admission to the Exhibition, receptions, excursions, and a volume of proceedings to each member.
