The DfT has now opened up the longer semi-trailer scheme on a first come, first served basis to everyone, regardless of whether they are existing scheme participants or not. No operator can have more than 180 longer semi-trailers in their fleet. Operators that receive an allocation to run a longer trailer have six months to supply the DfT with proof of purchase before their permission expires. Hauliers that have allocations from the original version of the trial still have until 31 December to use them or they will expire. Despite this, the DfT ultimately expects there to be around 1,800 trailers in the trial.
