• Road safety can be taken into consideration when refusing an 0-licence on environmental grounds, the Transport Tribunal has ruled, Until now, the tribunal has maintained that a Licensing Authority could not take road safety and environmental factors into account when turning down a licence bid.
The decision was made following the rejection of appeals by two Notts-based operators who were refused licences to base trucks at Oakwood industrial estate, Cossall.
Jonathan Sims, trading as Ilkeston Haulage and Storage, and Dennis Sherwood of Sherwood Transport Services, were told by Eastern Deputy LA Humphrey Lewis that lorries would have difficulty entering the access road.
