election has been a dismally unprofitable affair with the political parties spending their cash without any guaranteed return — in the case of the Liberal Democrats, no return at all.

Think of the possibilities with an uncertain election result. Each party could tow a betting shop behind its gaily painted canvassing bus and earn a few extra quid instead of just shouting the odds.
