• Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service has taken delivery of three new lightweight fire appliances based on 10-tonne Roadrunner chassis.
The vehicles are smaller, lighter and more manoeuvrable than conventional Type D appliances, but Leyland Dal says they retain the features normally found on such vehicles.
While the new appliances feature the old Roadrunner-style grille they are powered by the latest 119kW (160hp) B Series engine option, which is now available on the latest 45 Series (CM 25 April-1 May).
Modifications to the chassis include a six-speed ZF gearbox and a PT-0.
The Belgium-built Rosenbauer bodywork includes an 1,800-litre GRP water tank, two hosereels and a 13.5m ladder. Rosenbauer also built the tilting steel crew-cab.
Chief fire officer Malcolm Eastwood says that the Roadrunners are cheaper to buy and run than Type B appliances.
