• As predicted by Commercial Motor, Leyland Daf has launched a more powerful version of its 60 Series Freighter chassis using the same 156kW (212hp) 6.2-litre engine as its FA 1900 NS 17-tonner.
In a move which further increases the presence of Daf diesel engines in Leyland-designed products, the FA 60.210 joins the FA 60.180, with its turbocharged version of the same engine rated at 134kW (180hp), and the lightweight FA 50.160 which is powered by the Cummins B Series.
The charge-cooled Daf NS six-pot has a peak torque of 650Nm (479Ibft) delivered at 1.600rpm and is coupled to a six-speed ZF synchrobox with an overdrive top gear. It is priced at 04,990.
Like the lower powered FA 60.180, the FA 60.210 comes with a seven-tonne front axle and an 11-tonne drive axle, providing a fair degree of loading latitude at 17 tonnes. Low-profile 295/80R 22.5 tyres are fitted as standard to give a laden frame height of 990mm.
Also standard on the FA 60.210 are an exhaust brake, automatic slack adjusters and an air brake dryer. Operators have the choice of six wheelbases to suit body lengths from 3.6-7.9m.
The charge-cooled NS engine adds some 60kg to the FA 60.210's kerbweight, although at 4,180kg for the 5 . 0 mwheelbase chassis it is still lighter than the equivalent FA 1900.
For drawbar work at 24.39 tonnes GTW the FA 60.210 is fitted with a 12-speed splitter box. Other options include alloy wheels, an auto box, ABS and air suspension. Like the recently launched 45 Series, the FA 60.210 has its own factory developed air management kit which, says Leyland Daf, can cut fuel consumption by up to 13%.
Although Leyland Daf now has two different models powered by the same 156kW NS engine, it will continue to offer the FA 1900 with its larger cab.
Of the 22,000 Leyland Daf 16/17-tonners on UK roads around 6,000 are FA 1900s.
CM has had a short drive in the FA 60.210. It pulled well fully laden even at low revs, proving a willing worker,
Interior noise levels were low, and apart from a noticeable gap between fourth and fifth the uprated Freighter showed good driveability.
