Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

to include Continental haulage. Could you say what is the usual scale of driver's subsistence for such work?

There is no accepted scale of subsistence; different companies adopt different methods of payment, often scaled to take into account the particular countries through which the vehicle is routed and the relevant rate of exchange. Some companies give the driver a lump sum for the journey based on previous experience and adjust the amount when the driver returns and presents receipts and dockets for expenditure incurred. Of course, if it is necessary for the driver to buy fuel on the trip then this kind of expenditure can be calculated beforehand by relating fuel consumption to the price of fuel in the countries concerned.
