After the recent displays of violence by the tiny-minded hooligans who follow some of the major soccer teams, there must be even more room for ideas like the Chrysler Fair Play Award, especially as the rowdies often seems to take their cue from the appalling fouls seen on the pitch.
Chrysler UK has long associations with Coventry (dare we say its Rootes are in the Midlands ?), and the company recently took up a remark once made by Coventry City's Jimmy Hill about the club developing closer links with industry, The resulting award goes to the first-team player who, during a season, has contributed most by his performance, conduct and sportsmanship to raising the standard of play. And it seems to me that raising the standard of play is fundamental to raising standards of spectating in football.
The winner—on a points system—gets an inscribed plaque, a wrist-watch and the use of a Chrysler car for a year.
If turning the other cheek is the name of the game, I hope they haven't donated an Avenger.
