Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Trojan for Earls Court

ANEW forward-control 25-cwt, chassis produced by Trojan, Ltd., Purley Way, Croydon, will make its first appearance on their stand at Earls Court next week. Although it will be exhibited with van bodywork, this chassis, which is the only prototype at the moment, complies with public service vehicle regulations and will eventually be offered as a complete 13-seat bus.

The chassis for the Show has the Perkins Four 99 oil engine of 1.6-litre capacity. It is rated to produce 42.3 b.h.p. at 3,600 r.p.m. and 73 lb.-ft. torque at 2.250 r.p.m. in this application, and employs •a distributor fuel-injection pump and a pre-combustion chamber type cylinder head. In production goods chassis the Perkins P3 unit will be installed.

Mounted in unit with the engine, the gearbox used with the Four 99 engine has four speeds with constant-mesh engagement of third and top gears. Ratios are: first 4.02 to 1, second 2.59 to 1, third 1.46 to I, top 1 to I. and reverse 5.03 to 1. When the P3 engine is installed the gearbox will be either the four-speed model or a three-speed unit with synchromesh on second and top gears. according to choice.

Four-point Mounting

The four-eylindered engine-gearbox unit is attached to the frame at four points through Metalastik rubber sandwich mountings, which are placed almost vertically at each end of a front crossbearer and at a similar angle on brackets bolted to the bell housing. When the P3 engine is fitted, only one front mounting, on the centre line of the engine, is used.

A one-piece Hardy-Spicer propeller shaft with universal joints incorporating needle-roller bearings takes the drive from the gearbox to a Salisbury hypoid rear axle. The ratio is 5.38 to 1 with the Four 99 engine or 4.09 to 1 when the P3 is used.

The frame is of welded and riveted construction, incorporating straight chan • net-section side members 41 in. deep, with 2-in, flanges in 10-gauge material. They are of box section at points of additional stress.

Four channel-section cross-members corresponding with similar outrigged members to carry the body are also in 10-gauge material; they are 51 in. deep, with 21-in. flanges. Between the first and second cross-members is a cruciform bracing structure.

Front suspension is of the Trojan independent trailing-arm type. Box-section trailing arms pivot on brackets mounted below plates welded to the extreme forward end of each chassis side member. The pivot bearing previously incorporated plain bushes, but these have been replaced on the new model by needkroller bearings, which will also be introduced on all other Trojan models having this form of suspension. The pivoting arm carries at its trailing end the stub axle on which is the ballbearing-mounted hub.

Quarter-elliptic leaf springs are clamped beside the pivot bearing and anchored at their trailing end to the stub axle. Damping for each 'suspension unit is provided by an Armstrong telescopic shock absorber mounted between the trailing arm and a bracket on the top of the chassis side member.

Rear suspension is by conventional semi-elliptic leaf springs with Armstrong shock absorbers.

Lockheed two-leading-shoe hydraulic brakes are fitted at the front, and leading and trailing shoes at the rear. At present, the drums used are 10 in. in diameter, with 14-in.-.wide facings, but production models are likely to have 11-in, drums to cater for the 25-cwt. payload.

Marks double-roller steering gives a ratio of 15.8 to 1. The clutch and brake pedals are mounted on a common shaft and a mechanical parallelogram linkage is used to operate the clutch. This linkage will probably be replaced by hydraulic actuation on production models.

The chassis has a wheelbase of 9 ft. 4 in. and a track of 5 ft. 0* in., although the track may be slightly altered according to the size of wheels fitted, which may be either 15 in. or 16 in. in diameter, carrying 7.00-15-in. or 6.50-16-in. tyres.

Wrap-round Windscreen

The body has 325 cu. ft. of loading space, or 345 cu. ft. if no passenger seat is fitted. Constructed of aluminium panelling on hardwood framing, it has a deep two-piece wrap-round windscreen divided by a thin centre pillar, and hinged doors on both sides of the cab.

No bulkhead is fitted behind the driver. but is ontionally available. The rear half of each door is behind the wheel-arch and encloses an intermediate step only 1 ft. from the ground.

Interior height of the body is 5 ft. 61 in. and the floor only 2 ft. 7 in. above ground level, unladen. A rear step below the doors is an extension of the tray which carries the spare wheel, this being enclosed by the skirts of the doors when they are closed.

Although the body of the model to be shown has only one plastics component— a frame at the front carrying headlamps and decorative trim—future models will make extensiae use of this material for the body panelling.

With an overall length of 15 ft. 7 in., the new Trojan has a swept turning circle of 44 ft. 2 in.
