UNCERTIFIED figures produced by a Bristol haulier were. most unsatisfactory, Mr. S. W. Nelson, Western Licensing Authority, declared last week. He adjourned an application by Mr. T. D. Trowbridge, Knowle, Bristol, until the figures had been properly certified by an accountant and witnesses could • be produced. Mr. Trowbridge wanted to amend the conditions of his twa-vehicleB licence td allow him -to carry goods for Rowe Bros: and Co., Ltd., -within 250 miles, and other goods within 50 miles. In evidence, Mr. Desmond Trowbridge said he started business as a haulier three years ago-and ran an ancillary business as a builders'merchant. Gross receipts with his B licence for the year ending August. 1957, were £2,462, and for the following • year they were £1,924, together with £2481.0 earned on cdntract7A work. The application was supported by Mr. Gordon Ri4,g, a traveller for May and Hassdl, Ltd., Bristol timber importers. lie said they wanted Mr. Trowbridge to go to Birmingham, Gloucester, Beaunemouth, Poole.: and Cheltenham. At present he .supplemented their fleet of .12 C-licence vehicles doing local deliveries. He produced a letter from the corn, pany, but admitted to Mr. R. A. Webb, for the British Transport. Commission, th.at.it. had been signed by. a clerk.. He said ,he wanted a haulier at a moment's notice, but agreed that some of the places he . had mentioned were outside the 50-mde radius being sought, Mr. Nelson said he. ought to refuse the applicatiOn, but he could see that the applicant did not realize the seriousness Of.,applying for additional facilities. He suggested . to Mr.. T. D.. Corpe, repr-e.seriting Mr. Trowbridge, that the matter should be -gone into again.
MANUFACTURER ANNOYED AT B.R.S. DELAY
DECAUSE a BritishRoad Services driver wanted a day off work to go on a seaside trip, textile goods from Batley to the south were seriously delayed. This was alleged by Maj. G. W. Hirst at last week's meeting of Batley and Birstall (Yorks) Chamber of Commerce. He said B.R.S. collected the goods on a Thursday, with Sunday as the delivery day, but on Monday the load had still not arrived. In explanation, B.R.S. said the man who was to have driven the lorry had applied to have a day off for a trip to Blackpool. Maj. Hirst added that four bales had beenripped open when the consignment finally arrived.
POLISH 'VENTURE SUCCEEDS " INITIAL success, is claimed by the POlish State Road Transport Board for their recently inaugurated internaticmal services. At' present,haulage in this field is being undertaken by 10 21-ton lorries, whilst '20 coaches are coping with passenger work.
