THE wage claim by provincial company busmen has been referred to
arbitration by Mr. lain Macleod, Minister of Labour. The claim, by 100,000 workers, will be heard by the Industrial Disputes Tribunal in London on October 9. The Transport and General Workers' Union are asking for a pay rise of 14s. 6d. a week, and have already rejected a 5s. offer by the employers.
The decision of the Tribunal will, however, be binding on both sides. The Union's case is that the company busmen should be paid the same as crews on London Transport's country services. It was the Union who urged that the matter should go to the Tribunal when talks broke down in July after the three per cent. offer had been rejected.
The Tribunal's decision is likely to influence the award to 80,000 municipal busmen, whose claim has been outstanding for sorne time. At the Municipal Passenger Transport Association's Conference last week the question of wages was discussed at length by some delegates, who said bus crews were underpaid.
