ACOMPACT power-operated crane for use on vehicles and in warehouses has been introduced by Messrs. Denyer and Son, Alton, Hants. It weighs about 130 lb., and the makers claim that by its use two men can load up to 80 sacks of wheat in a shorter time than is required to stack a similar load with the help of four men lifting by hand.

Power is provided by a 95 c.c. petrol engine, which works with a hydraulic pump and hydraulic cylinder and piston. Fuel and fluid tanks are carried on the jib. A hand-operated valve regulates the supply of pressure fluid to the cylinder and thus controls lifting and lowering.

When a sack has been lifted to the correct height, it is positively held in that position. The machine is built to deal with an overload of approximately 25 per cent., at which point a relief valve comes into operation. The jib is easily fitted to the body by insertion into a socket, which can be incorporated quite simply in the structure: or at any convenient point in a warehouse.
