were interested to learn that final-drive pinions and crown wheels are mated to 0.0001 in. If, after lapping, the inaccuracy is as much as 0.0002 in., they are not passed. In the event of the fault lying with the pinion, this is then mated with a crown wheel cut to correspond with it. Incidentally, after lapping, the carborundum paste is completely cleaned off by passing the gears through steam jets at high pressure. Another important point is that before assembly the crown wheels are warmed and expand about 0.001 in., which ensures a correct fit when in operation. Following the cutting of bevel pinions, each is tested with a dial gauge previously set to a master gear. The gauge A22 measures the distance between each pair of teeth on the pitch circle, and a tolerance of only 0.0001 in. is allowed.

There are 8,760 hours in a year, so that the taxpayers —who have to make up the loss—paid 4,000,000 francs an hour in addition to their railway fares. They have to meet this cost whether they use the trains or not, so that those who do travel in this way are, to an extent, subsidized by those who travel by other means.

from the Midland Red," the whole of the first hatch of 100 single-deckers, known as the S.6 type, with under-floor engines, has been delivered to the company, and each of its garages is operating at least one of these. Progress has also been made with the construction of the chassis for the second 100, which will be known as the S.8 type, signifying that these vehicles have been constructed to take bodies with the new width of 8 ft. It is hoped that deliveries of the latter vehicles will commence in six months. At the same time work is proceeding on new long-distance coaches, of which 57 are on order; 45 of these are a development of an existing type but redesigned to accommodate chassis with under-floor engines. The remaining 12 will be specially designed to operate extended tours. It is hoped that most of these will be available for the 1948 season. A Special Australian A WOMAN p.s.v. operator Bus for Prams and " in Geelong, Victoria, Mothers New South Wales, has put into service an unusual type of vehicle. This is a " pram-bus " complete with hostess. According to "Truck and Bus Transportation," the need for such a type of vehicle has long been apparent, but it took a woman to do something about it. The vehicle has a wide centre aisle for the prams complete with babies, and there are seats, 12 ins, wide, along the sides for the mothers and older children. The doors have, of course, been widened to permit easy entry and exit. The driver's seat, which originally was in the way, is mounted on a swivel so that it can be swung aside. Accommodation is provided for 15 prams and seven push cars with the accompanying personnel. Nursery pictures are mounted inside instead of the usual advertisements. This bus makes eight three-mile trips to and from town daily.
