• London Regional Transport has signed a 23.5 million contract with Plessey UK to equip about 4,500 buses wtih transponders which will give them priority at traffic lights.
This follows a pilot scheme including 950 buses and 56 major road junctions in South East London.
LRT says that the cost of the scheme will be recouped in just over a year through time saving but it will take about four years to complete.
Transponders will cause lights to change to green ear her or remain at green to allow a bus to cross a junction. This will improve service reliability with little overall effect on other traffic, claims LRT.
The move has been welcomed by the Department of Transport and the Association of London Boroughs.
ALA, representing the Labour-controlled boroughs last week published a transport strategy calling for 2,000 more buses; integration of bus, rail and underground services, and light rail projects in suburban centres.
