RO-R0 trailer traffic returned ro Tilbury this week with the resumption of daily sailings to Zeebrugge by Searoads Ferries, a privately owned line set up a year ago.

Seventy trailer movements a day each way have already been contracted, says managing director Steve Gobbi. Most are unaccompanied.

"I am hoping to build up trailer movements to 100,000 a year over the next 12 months," says Gobbi. That would be more than double the present level of traffic.

The new service would put pressure on hauliers tim South Essex to provide services, he predicts.

Searoods' services were stopped on April 22 owing to "lack of industrial agreement" with dockers and clerical staff at Tilbury. The resumption follows an agreement on flexible working.
