SIR DAN Pettit is to retire as chairman of the Lorries and the Environment Committee at the end of the year.
The committee was founded in 1974 when then transport minister John Peyton asked Sir Dan to assemble a group of people to "examine the role of road haulage today and its impact upon the lives of millions of people who, though they may benefit from it, greatly resent its intrusion."
The resultant committee is a voluntary body made up of representatives from industry, transport, county and local authorities and trade associations.
Sir Dan, 64, is a past chairman of SPD and was chairman of the National Freight Corporation.
