Name change for Siddle

• The Tayforth Group of companies has changed the name of one of its haulage subsidiaries, Siddle C. Cook Ltd, to Road Services (Tyne-Tees) Ltd. The name change has been made to identify the company to its area of activity. In this case the company has depots in Newcastle, Consett and Darlington.

• Britain's 65,000 public service vehicles are, in general, better maintained than the 800,000 commercial vehicles. This opinion was expressed by Mr S. G. Harris, senior area mechanical engineer, Eastern traffic area, when he opened a new workshop and warehousing complex of Reece Bros (Transport) Ltd, and its associate company Doe Engineering Ltd, at Ipswich on Friday.

Mr Harris said that the situation with commercial vehicles had improved in recent times. "Up to 10 years ago," he said, "one in two went off the road following inspections; today the figure is nearer one in five."

Mr Harris said that the cost to operators of achieving maintenance standards to meet the requirements of the 1968 Act were higher

Door to door

• Coastways Freight Agencies is starting a new door to door service between Britain and Denmark, this month. Refrigerated trailers which can also carry heated or dry traffic are being used. than they should have been. This he put down to lack of expertise and a serious shortage of trained maintenance staff. "We know of many ways in which the maintenance cost could be reduced without reducing standards," he said.

Reece Bros depot is on A1002 which joins Al2 to A45 at Great Blakenham, about six miles from Ipswich.

Reece Bros operate 50 vehicles, mainly Scammells and Guys with Merriworth trailers from three depots at Ipswich, Felixstowe, and London.

Mr E. B. R. Smith, who won the RHA's first essay competition for his paper entitled "Towards a better road haulage industry", in 1969, is in charge of the new depot.

Woodward service

• The Formby-based firm of H. Woodward and Sons Ltd, which celebrates its 50th anniversary on November 5, has taken over and intends to expand the British Leyland Liverpool service depot in Rice Lane.
