Restrictions•A SUCCESSFUL appeal was made
last week by Mr. L. J. French to the Transport (Appeal) Tribunal. in London, against a decision of the East Midland Deputy Licensing Authority.
Mr. French had aPplied for a B licence for one vehicle to carry general goods up to a radius of 25 miles from Sand ford St. Martin, but was granted permission to carry up to only five miles. He was restricted to The haulage . of manure and household effects from May until September, . The appellant was a coal. merchant and maintained that the coal business was insufficiently remunerative. It was useless to , restrict his B-licence work to the five Months laid down.
because manure was wanted on the land during the winter, and not the summer. He staled that he had put-"
chased his misiness &or* a Mr. Harris,
who possessed a B
licence, but had allowed it to lapse because of illness. Mr.
French wished to carry goods other than manure and household effects, as he was often called upon to transport farmyard equip ment.
Mr. R. McQuown, representing six , road respondents, said
that neither his clients nor the Railway Executive, which also responded, would press for the restriction to five Months of the year. He submitted that the appellant was a newcomer and that the evidence given did not show need for a radius greater than five miles.
The chairman' said that the Authority would be directed to grant a licence for
the carriage of general goods within a 12-mile radius. The Tribunal Telt that Mr. French was meeting a public need in being prepared to use his vehicles to carry small lots.
