NEW IEYLAND-THOMPSON TANKER FOR SHELL

CAPABLE of pumping through two IL., hoses at the rate of 350 g.p.m., the Leyland-Thompson Dorset tanker is being put into use by the Shell Aviation Service. The Dorset is to be introduced at points on the British Overseas Airways Corporation's routes 'to be operated by de Havilland Comet.jet aircraft. Sixty machines have been ordered. Their initial cost is stated to be less than two-thirds that of any aircraft fueller of comparable performance.

The Dorset has an electrically welded 3,000-gallon tank of almost square section. A single high-pressure centrifugal pump driven by a power take-off is incorporated, and a special automatic pressure-control valve governs the setting, flow,adjustment and pressure.

During a recent demonstration at London Airport, a Dorset, using a single hose coupled to a Comet, delivered at a continuous rate of 208 g.p.m. The new-tanker weighs 20 tons 19 cwt. laden, and is 29 ft. 10 ins. long, 7 ft. 5 ins, wide and 8 ft. 9 ins. high.
