A LLEGED persistent and wilful L'A. breaches of the conditions of his licence resulted in a Dundee haulier, Mr. A. B. Greig, of Balfour Street, having half his fleet put off the road at a special sitting of the Scottish Deputy Licensing Authority, in Dundee. last Friday.

Ministry of Transport officers gave evidence that Mr. Greig's vehicles had been seen outside the 25-mile -radius as far afield .as Selby (Yorkshire), Manchester and South Wales. He was frequently warned, but at one interview he used obscene language and on . another occasion said ,that dspite the Ministry, he would continue running his vehicles anywhere.

' Convictions for offences under the Transport Act were admitted at Dundee and •Dumfries Sheriff Coutes and Carlisle and Newport Magistrates' Courts. 'An agent 'said Mr. Greig admitted kicking over the traces, but undertook . that there . would be no recurrence; MI. A. Robertson, Deputy Licensing • AuthoritY, said the contraventions had been wilfully committed and Mr: Greig had no intention of complying with any of the regulations: He had simply set .. himself tip to defy the law. .

Mr. Robertson ordered that four platformvehicles be deleted from Mr. Greig's licence as from October 19, leaving him with four .tippers. . He warned Mr. Greig that he would have no hesitation in cancelling the rernainder if further breaches 'occurred.

TWO MUNICIPAL MANAGERS DIE AT 46

GENERAL managers of two municipal undertakings died last week, both at the age of 46. They were MR. F. E. COOK, of Halifax Transport Department, and Ma. E. G. Thomas, of Chester Transport Department.

Mr. Cook, who studied at Reading University, was rolling-stock superintendent with Reading Transport Depart ment for six years. He then joined Southport Transport Department, later becoming general manager. From Southport he went to Halifax. While at Southport he introduced a novel service on the foreshore, using converted exW.D. four-wheel-drive vehicles for passenger carrying.

Mr. Thomas began his career as an apprentice to a Swansea motor service company, of which he became chief engineer. He was deputy general manager of Merthyr Tydfil Transport Department from 1943 until 1945, when he took up his appointment at Chester.

MR. H. S. DOWNES, Norwich district manager of the Dunlop Rubber Co., Ltd., has also died suddenly.
