ELIA13LE and economical service

‘from oil-engined vehicles is being obtained by the Burton Transport Co., 78, Derby Street, Burton-on-Trent, which, incidentally, has now opened a• London office at 117, Hammersmith Road, W.14.

A Leyland Cub lorry, equipped, in October, 1933, with a Gardner 3LWtype oil engine, has covefed about 50,000 miles, and, with a 4-ton load. gives a fuel-consumption return of 2i m.p.g. When hauling a trailer, a figure of 18 m.p.g. is obtained, the gross weight of the combined outfit being 11 tons. Oil consumption works out at the rate of 1,250 m.p.g.

The maintenance cost has, we understand, been nil, and, with standard gear ratio, a: maximum speed of 80 m.p.h. is available. The general performance is said by the owner to be excellent.

The company has also recently pur

chased a Pagefield Pegasix 8-ton rigid six-wheeler, with Goodyear 10.50 by 20 single tyres all round. The vehicle, which has a Gardner 102 b.h.p. sixcylindered engine, is equipped for trailer work, and has a cab and body built specially to meet the company's requirements by Messrs. Henry Eaton, Palmerston Street, Manchester. With a 10-ton load, the fuel-consumption rate is 12 m.p.g. This machine is illustrated elsewhere in this issue.

'Another recent acquisition is an E.R.F. C15-type lorry, with a Gardner 85 b.h.p. five-cylindered oil engine and a pay-load capacity of about 8 tons. The machine pulls a 6-ton trailer and gives first-rate performance with a load of 13-14 tons. The fuel consumption for the lorry alone works out at the rate of 17 m.p.g. and with trailer 15 m.p.g. The cab and platform body were built by J. II. Jennings and Sons, Ltd., Sandbach.
