Bradford and New Wage Scales.

Following a request that Bradford City Council should consider the acceptance of the wages scale recommended by the National Joint Conciliation Board, the finance committee has recommended that the corporation should remain under the Joint Industrial Council for non-trading services.

Bolton's New Leyland Fire-fighter.

The new Leyland FT2 fire-engine, which has been commissioned by the 13Olton Fire Brigade, is a 700 g.p.m. model with a maximum output of 980 gallons, and it has replaced a machine that has seen 21 years' service. It is

During the year ended March 31 last, Manchester Corporation's cleansing department, which has a fleet of 83 petrol vehicles and 561 horse-drawn vehicles, collected 207,115 tons of refuse; 774 miles of streets were regularly cleansed, and 39,416 loads of sweepings were removed. In addition, about 8,651,300 gallons of water were distributed. Daimler Municipal Bus Progress.

At the annual meeting of the Birmingham Small Arms Co., Ltd., the chairman, Sir Alexander Roger, in reviewing the past year's work, intimated that the bus business of its subsidiary, the Daimler Co., Ltd., had made definite progress. He added that the company is receiving inquiries from corporations and operators in all parts of the country, and mentioned that the number of municipal users of Daimler buses had been increased by eight during the past 12 months—sound evidence of the confidence reposed in the merits of the Daimler Fluid Flywheel.

CLOSING DEVON ROADS TO HEAVY TRAFFIC.

Devon County Council gave notice, last FridaY, that the Ministry of Transport would hold an inquiry, at the Castle of Exeter, on November 7, into the council's application for confirmation of its Order of June 14 last concerning the use by motor traffic of a number of roads in the county.

The proposals include the closing to heavy motor traffic of certain roads in the Buckfastleigh, Newton Abbot, Okehampton and Torrington rural districts. Certain exceptions in road restrictions are made in favour of timber, traders' and agricultural vehicles.

Rates for Westminster's Transport.

The works committee of Westminster City Council recommends the acceptance of the following quotations for the hire of tipping lorries and drivers for the removal of snow during the winter CliffOrds (Fulham), Ltd., 7s. per hour, 6 a.m.-6 p.m., 8n per hour, 6 p.m.6 a.m., and 8n per hour on Sundays; H. Sabey and Co., Ltd., 7s. 6d., 8s. 6d. and 9s. 6d. respectively ; Burn Transit, Ltd., 8s. 7d., 8s. 7d. and 10s. 7d. ; and W. E. Chivers and Sons, Ltd., 9s. 6d., 10s. 6d., and 11s. 6d. The committee recommends that the services of these contractors be used in the order in which the quotations are favourable to the council.

Woolwich Borough Council is to erect and equip a central garage at Plumstead at a cost of £10,000.
