Whitehead . and Furness, Ltd., Cecil Street, Dukinfiehl, invited, through the local education committee, a' number of schoolboys to visit the works of the Ford Motor Co. (England), Ltd, at Trafford Park during the recent Manchester Civic Week. The party consisted of approximately 100 boys drawn from the higher standards of elementary schools in the borough and was conducted through the works by Mr. Arnold Whitehead and Ford officials. They assembled at the company's works and were conveyed to Trafford Park by motor coach.

The question of rubber tyres for heavy vehicles was one of several matters pertaining to commercial motor transport discussed by the Swansea Highways Committee 'at its October MeetingThe matter was debated from the standpoint of lessening 'wear and Jeer on roads, and it was agreed to act in accordance with a spggestien of the .Ministry of Transport to adopt so far as is possible the principle that inall haulage contracts the "-vehicles used shall have rubber tyres or bands.

Orders for Shefflex Vehicles.

Amongst recent deliveries which have been made by the Sheffiex Motor Co., Tinsley, . Sheffield,are a 30-40-ewt. chassis for Mr.H. Morton, haulage contractor;Of Sheffield, and a•40.-50-esvt. chassis for Mes.srs. -A. H. Piunell, engineers and boilermakers, of Bristol.

The company have recently received several orders for Shefflex vehicles, amongst the outstanding being a 30-40cwt. tipping. lorry for Messrs. W. J: Tune and Sons, builders merchants, Sheffield, a 30-40-cwt. long wheelbase chassis with Special body for carrying bar steel and iron for Messrs. G. Pickin and Sons, Ickles, Rotherham, a 40-50cwt, tipping lorry for Messrs.. Worthy! and Osborne, coal merchants, Woodhouse, near Sheffield, and a similar vehicle for Mr. J. Hill, quarry owner, Barnsley.

New Services Around Darlington.

Mr. A. Speak, . who some time ago commenced the operation of motorbuses in the Darlington neighbourhood under the title of the Express Motors, is now preparing to make interesting service expansions. New vehicles are on order to supplement the small .fleet of Guy 110seaters at present in service, and .sanction has been secured from the .Darling-' ton Corporation to operate between that • town and Bishop Auckland by an alter-. -native route from that already worked by other Owners, as Well as , to 'run buses to West Hartlepool, via Stockton.

. Freeing Gainsborough Bridge.

One of the most important of the few facilities for crossing the river Trent in Lincolnshire is that afforded by the Gainsborough bridge, for the purchase of which from a private company negotiations have been long in progress upon the part of the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire authorities. The" lowest price the company would take was £130,000, this representing £1,000 per share, plus £1,000 to cover the cost of the bridge company and compensation to their ' officers. In view' of the large amount asked -for, the question of building a free bridge ha been considered, dud, incidentally, the suggestion had been made that the right of the company to charge tolls for motors should be tested in the courts. It has now been determined, however, to recommend the local authorities to 'purchase the bridge for £130,000, upon the Ministry of Transport making a grant of 50 per cent.. •
