THERE IS a great deal of worldly wisdom in the decision of . the directors of the Vulcan Co. to make a 30 cwt. vehicle. The market for such a capacity is very .open, and the demand considerable, for it fulfils the requirenients of. so many people and is adaptable to so many uses. As a van, it is of full capacity, and is capable of dealing . with quite an extensive delivery Service. As 'a farmer's general , Purpose vehicle, as a station, bus, and as a cha,r-abanes it is equally 'suitable. It takes a tip wagon admirably. Vulcan engine design has always been noterkfor general excellence, cleanliness of exterior, good lubrication, accksibility, and efficiency. The fous-cyfinD36 dared monobloc power unit has a oylinder bore of 90 mm., with a piston stroke of 130 imm. It drives through a four-speed gearbox to a .Werm=driven live axle. At 1,200 revs, per minute, speeds of 4.9, 7.6,12.6, and 19.6 miles per hour are attained, The chassis is designed so as to be suitable for equipment with either solid or pneumatic tyres. With solid tyres cast-steel road wheels are employed. The standard Vulcan chassis is without any superstructure behind the dashboard. The general purpose chassis has a driver's cab, with windscreen, side windows and doors, and is equipped with an electric lighting outfit, comprising a dynamo, battery, and complete set of lamps, the difference in the prices of the

two chassis being £100. •

The tipping body on the Vulcan stand well merits close examination. Two hydraulic rams operate in two-trunnionsupported cylinders mounted on the frame, the upper portion of the rams being knuckle-jointed to the under-side of the body, which itself is attached to the rear of the frame on a substantial hinge. A gear pump in an oil reservoir carried on cross members of the frame is operated by a flexible shaft driven by a friction wheel which can be pressed into engagement with another on the

clutch centre by means of a lever. The pump delivers oil under pressure to the base of the rams lifting them and the

wagon body. The operation is quite quick, and the body can be retained in the lifted position by closing the tap between the ram and the pump. By opening the tap, the oil returns to the reservoir under the weight of the body. , The 20-seater char-a-banes is a very.

comfortable vehicle of just a nice size for any district where the average parties do not run to the full coachload and where the roads are none of the widest. The small coach, too is after' a better proposition than the large oneas being easiar to fill and cheaper to run, and many owners of large • vehicles are adding these smaller ones to their fleet for the particular kind of work to which they are suited because of their smaller capacity.

The station :bus is a very capacious vehicle, and the need for mal.ting due provision for luggage accommodation has been carefully attended to in the design.
