STAND No. 53.

"Example exhibited at 0/yiripia. Tilting-Stevens Motors, Ltd., Maidstone, Kent.

THEPETROL-VILECTRIC chassis made by this company are amongst the few radical deviations from standard practice in the deeigivof petrol vehicles which have`proved an unqualified success. Their exhibits -at the Show comprise two-petrobelectric models, and one gear driven. One of the p.e. chassis is a standard type wit-ha 40 h.p. engine slightly modified to allow for the fitting of a single. deck.bus body with a larger carrying capacity than usual. The extra space available for seating is obtained by placing-the steering outside the main frame and increasing' the wheelbase by 1 ft., with the result that comfortable seatIng accommodation is available for 32 passengers. Entrances are provided at the front and rear to allow simultaneous loading and unloading, whilst, theainterior is divided into two compartments, theefront seating .1.9 and the rear 13, the latter beingfor smokers. The driver is in a Special self-contained cornpartment ,accessibler only by a door on the offside, which • renders communica

flan between passengers and driver impossible. The upholstery is in rattan, whilst efficient ventilation is ensured by a high semi-elliptic roof and drop windows, the latter operated by cent-roiling gear placed.at the conductor's end of the vehicle. This body was designed and constructed at the company's Maidstone works.

The second p.e. eihibit is -a stripped chassis, and is of the 50 h.p. three-four ton, type. This is a post-war production, and incorporates several important improvements. The engine, which is supported on a sub-frame having three-point suspension, has four cylinders of 5 in. bore and 6 in. stroke. The crankcase is constructed with the crankcase arms an

the top half, which also holds the main bearings, so that the bottom half can be dropped without disturbing the engine alignment. A further inaprovemenli on the company's earlier models is effected by the introduction of internal, instead of external, dynamo and motor cooling fans, Which allow the commutator end covers to be removed, without interfering with the fans... .

The Tilling-8tevens p.e. system is very simple in operation. The engine drives a dynamo through a laminated spring, connection, and the only connection between the dynamo and the, motor is electric, by means of wires. From the motor the drive to the rear axle is by way of a. earclan shaft to an overhead

worm-driven rear axle. In the new mod.el this axle embodies many improvements, one of which is the provision of renewable •steel sleeves on the bearing ends of the axle .tulics. There sleeves can be turned round tolan angle of 180 degrees in order to present two wear ing surfaces. • The 2g ton gear-driven chassis also incorporates many improvements, including a threepoint suspended engine with the bottom half of the crankcase removable. The clutch has been re-designed, and there is now a double universal joint between the clutch and the gearbox. A governor of the centrifugal type is also provided.
