• REPRESENTING the famous Basing

stoke factory of Thornycroft's, pioneers of commercial motor goods . vehicles and winners of a great war reputation, are the three smallest models--the B.T. two tanner, the X. three tonner, and the J. 13= former. The Model Q., to handle five tons, is not shown. The Model X. is fitted with a 28-seater motor coach body, and is mounted on pneumatic tyres. The B.T. chassis has a box van, which is part of a fleet now being supplied to the L. and N.W. Railway Co. The J. type vehicles have a singledeck bus body on the one and a tip wagon operated by Thernycroft hydraulic tip gear on the other. The chassis are naturally (for the great majority of makers have settled down to the specification) fitted with four-cylindered engines, the B.T. type engine being rated at 30 h.p. at a normal speed of 1,000 revolutions per minute. The X. and J. type chassis are fitted with the same model engine of 40 h.p. The smallest model has a three-speed gearbox, and the two larger have four-speed gearboxes, but Worm drive to the rear axle is standard throughout the range of chassis.

The char-a',-banes Itody is specially de, signed for long-distance touring, as-it is fitted with a large compartment for carrying luggage, and has a C.A.V. -lighting set. The hood with which it.is equipped is Bartla's "patent divisible," each seat having it's. own, hood _section capable of being raised or lowered independently of the others, hut all clasely abutting in the raised position, and each smugly folding on to the top of its seat back. Such a hood, being capable of

being quickly raised, overcomes one of the objections to the usual collapsable overhead protection as, before the latter can usually be got into position, the passengers have become wet. The single. deck bus built for the Corporation of Cambridge is a very fine vehicle, with a • number of good points which must make for the comfort and convenience of passengers and tend to bring into popularity the service to. which it is attached. The • tipping wagon is being demonstrated to onlookers, and the tipping gear is undergoing quite a deal of work in thus satisfying people's curiosity.
