STAND No. 46.

f\N this stand are exhibited four ax LF of Star cowman-ear vehielee, all different and • covering a wide range sf possible uses, from the light delivery ran to the heavy lorry or char-A-banes. Ile actual vehicles on view are a 30 cwt. lassis with solid tyres, a 30 cwt. van with pneumatic tyres, a 50 cwt. tip wagon, and a 3 ton chassis. As men-.limed in the recently-published and fully descriptive article on Star vehicles (Comnercial Motor, October 5th), it is only he 3 tanner that is a new production, the other two types being, with one or -.we, minor modifications, the same as lose supplied during the past year. It dmoId he noticed that in all three types the power and forward transmission units are identical—en excellent feature from be point of view of rapid production— chile the rest axle design varies with he type, and is specially designed to nary the loads for which the vehicles ire made.

Briefly, the engine is a 90 mm, bore four-cylinder (in pairs) unit with a stroke of 150 mm., and developa a brake-horae

power of 38. An aluminium cover encloses the valve stems and springs on each pair of cylinders, and it will he observed that advantage is taken of the

exhaust beat to assist in vaporizing the fuel, an air muff on the exhaust pipe being connected to the intake of the Zenith carburetter. .

The east aluminium and tubular radiator is strong, and presents a large coaling surface for the pump-circulated water.

An inverted cone clutch engages in the flywheel, and transmits the power to a four-speed-and-reverse gearbox, the,

shafts of which run in Timken roller bearings, and provide direct drive on top gear. An open propeller shaft is employed on all models.

The 30 cwt. rear axle is of the over head worm type, the 50 cwt, is a double

bevel and

spur type, the 3 toneer ia again of the worm variety. All three axles have one thing in common, he-, the weight of the chassis is borne by the axle sleeves, leaving the shafts free from strain other than driving.

The 50 cwt. tip wagon Flown is built on a chassis with a wheelbase of 10 fr. 6 ins. which is built to suit existing weigh-bridges, but the same chassis is also made as standard with a wheelbase of 12 ft. 6 ins. It should also be noticed that although the track and wheelbase as well as many of the mechanical features of the new 3 tanner are identical with the 50 cwt. (long wheelbase model), the actual platform space is over 2 ft. longer.

Suspension is by semi-ellipties all round on each model, whilst the front axle is a very strong " H" section stamping.

The tipping gear shown on the 50 cwt. wagon is made, together with two other similar types, as a separate unit for other marrufacterers.
