ONE OF THE MOST interest, lug exhibits at the Show, and one which is proving an immense attraction, is the Searnmell six-wheeled tractor lorry, one complete example of which is exhibited, together with a special double-ended trailer known as the Billingsgate type. Many improvements have been made in the Seam.mell since its inception, although these are chiefly of a minor nature. It will be unnecessary to enumerate these again, as this was done in our issue of the 5th lest.
The Scammell consists of a tractor unit carrying, by heavy springs on its axle, a. turntable consisting of six steel pressings. In the centre of this turntable is a spigot, which takes the lateral movement and drive to the carrier chassis and body. Through the centre of-this spigot passes an operating pin for the earner _brakes; this pin is forced upwards by a bell crank lever and operated by a flexible connection coupled to the hand
brake lever at the side of the driver.
The tractor unit is provided with a powerful engine, with four cylinders cast in pairs and with a bore and stroke of 5 ins. and 51 ins. The cylinder heads are separate, and the valves are of the overhead type operated by tubular push
rods and with offset rockers to give rapid ., valve action. The crankcase is an aluminium casting, extremely short and stiffly ribbed. The crankshaft is a 40-ton drop-steel forging with a diameter of 2i ins' . the flywheel being positioned so that it does not extend beyond the crank shaft. The oil is pressure-fed direct to the crankshaft, no external pipes being employed, and the norntal oil pressure 1121 10 lb. The cooling water is circulated by a centrifugal pump with castiron casing carried on the crankcase, and circulated through a very large cast-aluminium header and bottom tank type radiator, cooling being assisted by an aluminium fan, 22 ins, in diameter. The drive is taken from the engine through a Ferodosfaced aluminium cone clutch and clutch shaft, with two star type universal joints to a three-speed-and-reverse gearbox with a one-piece cast-aluminium casing, in which the main bearings are carried in steel housings. From thence the drive is taken to a bevel-driven countershafts and by sprockets and roller chains_ to the rear wheels. Between the gearbox and the countershaft is fitted a compound star type universal joint, completely-enclosed and running in grease.
