'Example exhibited at Olympia. Maudslay Motor Co., Ltd., Parbside, Coventry.

SOAIE VERY interesting exhibits are to be found on the stand occupied by this company. There is a six ton lorry, with a platform body 21 ft. 6 ins. long atfla 7 ft. wide, a 28 seater char-as banes, and 35 seater saloon bus; for municipal or similar work there is a five ton tipping wee= with Maudslay patent either-side tipping gear. Of all these, perhaps the most interesting exhibit is the six ton platform lorry. This is designed specially for the use of brewers, as, with its long Platform, six tons of barrels can be stowed on end, which is impossible with a shorter platform. In order to obtain the extra length, the driver's seat is moved forward so that he is positioned at the side of the engine ; the steering, of course, also has to be moved, and the steering box is bolted to the offside frame member in line with the radiator. At the left-hand side of the driver are situated the gear. changeand hand-brake levers.

The engine and gearbox are carried on a sub-frame which terminates just behind the gearbox, and the main side members of the frame are made of straight rolled channel steel, 26 ft. long, and braced by six wrought-steel cross tubes. Bolts have been used in place of rivets through this part of the chassis.

The 40 h.p. engine follows standard Mairdslay practice, having overhead valts and camshaft. The bore and stroke are both 5 ins. The aluminium cone clutch, which is self-contained, is faced with Ferodo. The gearbox provides four forward speeds, and behind it is positioned a very powerful contracting footbrake. Two universal joints are provided for the propeller shaft. The rear axle is of the banjo type, and is provided with a double-reduction gear, the first reduction being by bevels. Powerful internal-expanding brake shoes are also provided in the rear wheel • drums.

The Mandalay char-labanes chassis has already been described in full in the pages of this journal, but it will not be out of place to give a resume.

The power unit, has a bore of 41 ins. and a stroke of 5 ins. The cylinders are cast in pairs, but are positioned closely together, and the water-jackets are connected, opening into each other through an aperture 81 ins. by 3 ins., so that, in effect, the result is mOnobloc construction. • Following usual Maudslay practice, the valves and their operating gear are disposed overhead, and in the camshaft drive is incorporated a unique type of ball universal joint, which permits of the shaft casing and the valve tappet gear being slung over sitar of the valves, so that each of the latter may be with. drawn by unscrewing the holding-down nuts provided for each, valve box. The water circulation is by centrifugal puhap, and a hot-water jacket surrounds the induction pipe of the Zenith carburetter.

A Ferodo-faced cone clutch transmits the power through a clutch shaft provided with universal joints to a gearbox giving four forward speeds. At the forward enclt of the propeller shaft is a double universal joint, equipped with large-sized ball hearings, whilst the rear end cd the shaft, has a joint of the pot type.

The rear axle follows standard Maude. lay design, and incorporates a banjo steel forging, the final drive being by overhead worm.
