STAND No. 17.

British Agents: Maxwell Motors, Ltd., 116, Great Portland Street, London, W. 1.

MAXWELL vehicles are perhaps not 1'1 so well known in the British commercial vehicle world as in the touring car industry. For this reason, and also because vehicles bearing this familiar American name merit attention, visitors should not fail to call at the stand occupied by the British agents, Maxwell Motors, Ltd., 116, Great Marlborough Street, London, W. Three examples of the company's 25 cwt. chassis are shown, one being a base chassis, which will enable visitors to make a thorough inspection of its construction, the second being fitted with a char--banes body, and the third with an ordinary lorry body.

The engine of the Maxwell chassis is of the four-cylindered type, with a ism and stroke of 31 infs. and 4; ins.

respectively. lri the latest model shown, two improvements are evident, these being the incorporation of a hot-spot and the ram's horn manifold. The former should be of considerable advantage, bearing in mind the present quality of various grades of fuel. This hot-spot makes use of the exhaust gases to heat a certain portion of the inlet manifold enough to volatilize the fuel being drawn into the engine. Engine lubrication is provided by a combination of pump and splash system, with an oil gauge on the left side of the crankcase. The cylinders are cast en bloc with a detachable head, and all the valves are completely enclosed. The crankshaft is of exceptional size and strength, and is fitted with large bearings. Water circulation is on the thermo-syphonic principle, with positive oil slump. The clutch is of the cone type faced with Multihestos lining, and it runs in oil. The gearbox is of the selective sliding type. It provides three speeds forward and a reverse, and is bolted to the flywheel housing. The rear axle has a very heavy malleable iron housing with Timken-DavidBrown worm drive. The propeller shaft transmitting the drive has double universal telescopic joints. The front axle is a heavy drop forged steel I-beam section. The brakes are of the inteinalexpanding type operating on drums in the rear wheels. 'Wheels are of the wo`od artillery type. The wheelbase of the Maxwell chassis is 10 ft. 4 ins., the track being 4 ft. 8 ins., and the body platform has a loading displacement of 47 sq. ft., which is ample for the average requirements when one considers the carrying capacity of the vehicle.
