STAND No. 33.
British Agent Fiat Motors, Ltd., 5, Albemarle Street, London, W.
..71‘IATPRODUCTIONS are by no I means new to the British market; in fact, the range of chassis and the tractor made by this Italian concern have a popularity which is pre-eminent amongst vehicles of foreign manufacture. Tho company's exhibit is one of the most comprehensive in the whole Show, including, as it does, no fewer than eight models. These comprise a 10 owt. chassis fitted with box van body, a one ton chassis fitted with a tilt van body, a one ton chassis fitted with Joined() char-isbasics body, a one ton chassis fitted with a municipal ambulance body, a 3 ton chassis, a five ton chaasis, a taxicab, the remaining exhibit being a tractor.
As the one ton chassis is in the ascendancy on the stand, we will devote more space to the description of its oonstruction than to the other models.
The engine of the one-tonner, which has four cylinders cast en bloc, each with a bore and stroke of 80 mm. and 140 mm. respectively, develops 30 b.h.p. A feature of ilia chassis which calls for particular attention is the provision of automatic oiling to certain of the chassis members. The main delivery pipe is provided with a two-way union, one of which leads is normally in constant circuit with the engine. The other pipe may be brought into work at will by pressure of a button on the dash, and it delivers oil to the steering box and to the front axle pivot pins. Cooling is effected by means of a centrifugal pump. The drive from the engine is taken through a clutch of the oille,ss multipledisc pattern to a gearbox of the doublesliding type, giving four speeds forusard and a reverse. From the gearbox the transmission is by cardan shaft to the rear axle. The construction of the rear axle casing and torque tube eliminates the numerous joints of the more usual type of live axle casing.
The frame itself is of pressed-steel construction. Two brakes are fitted, one being a pedal-operated externalecontracting brake working on a drurOfitted to the main shaft of the gearbox, and the tither a side brake actuated by a hand lever and working on the rear wheels. The chassis shown is fitted with Michelin pneumatic tyres of 815 mm. by 105 mm. dimensions.
A char-Ã -bancs body fitted to another 'chassis of this capacity is of handsome finish, and is built to seat 11 persons, whilst the ambulance body, also fitted on a one ton chassis, and capable of accommodating two patients and an attendant, should not be missed by municipal authorities.
The 3i ton model has a 35 h.p. engine, with a. bore and stroke of 100 mm. and 180 mm. respectively. The five tonnes has a 36 h.p. engine, with a bore and stroke of 105 mm. and 180 mm. respec. tively. The former chassis is fitted with a sided lorry body, and the latter with a combined side and ;end tipping body. Each of these heavier models is chain. driven.
The 10 cwt. chassis is fitted with a 12-15 h.p. engine, with a bore and stroke of 70 ram. and 120 ram. respectively The taxicab is fitted with a London type body. The chassis employs an engine of the four-cylindered monobloc type, with a 70 mm. bore and 120 mm. stroke, the normal h.p. being 12-15. The bottom half of the crankcase and the gearbox form one complete casting, the two being connected together so as to form a tray containing14he flywheel,
clutch, etc. Unit construction is employed for the engine and gearbox. Bevel gear is used for the final drive. The axle is of the semi-floating type, the inner bearings for each wheel being supported on the axle casing.
The Fiat agricultural-tractor is dealt with elsewhere in this report.
