THERE are not many chain-driven

vehicles in the Show this year, in spite of the fact that a great number of people consider chain drive by no means an out-of-date form of final transmission; it has, in fact, very distinct advantages under certain conditions.

Prominent amongst the chain-driven vehicles is the Churchill three ton chassis, a machine, which is excellently designed throughout and for which the material is particularly carefully selected. On this year's model there are several very neat ideas in the way of small, though quite important, improvements.

The whole chassis is an example of dean and careful design. The engine is the 45 h.p. Tyler, a type of engine of which Messrs. Durham Churchill and Co. have had-some years' experience. It is carried by four alma on a channelsteel sub-frame, supported at the for ward end by the front cross-member and at the rear by a dropped cross-member passing under the base chamber. Awes, sibility of all details calling for attention has been carefully studied. The power is transmitted through a Champion metal-to-metal cone clutch (the company's own patented device), a fabric disc universal joint, a four-speed gearbox, and thence through differential gear to the countershaft and by chains to the road wheels. The power line from engine to countershaft is a straight line parallel to the side members of the frame, so that there is no angular movement, although universal joints are introduced in order to take care of any change in alignment caused by frame distortion over rough roads.

. The brakes are powerful, and thereby symbolical of the whole of the design. There are two vehicles exhibited, one of which is a three ton chassis carrying a lorry body having hinged sides, and the other will be a specially short wheelbase chassis made to accommodate three special one ton trucks, or an end-tipping body, as desired. Both exhibits are fitted with Lynton steel disc wheels and Shrewsbury and Challitier solid tyres.
