ore bite for LB's Royal Tiger?

• The growing demand from coach operators for more power could well force Leyland Bus into fitting its Royal Tiger Doyen integral coach with the 216kW (290hp) Cummins LTA 10-290 engine.

Although the Royal Tiger is currently only available with the horizontally-mounted 194kW (260hp) TL11 engine, the management-owned bus and coach builder is looking at the possibility of fitting its integral 12 metre coach with the more powerful LTA 10-290 in time for the start of the next year's coaching season.

The same charge-cooled engine is already fitted in Leyland Bus' Tiger 290 chassis (CM 15-21 October), and it would clearly increase the Royal Tiger Doyen's appeal with luxury PSV operators looking for highpowered premium specification coaches.

If Leyland Bus does decide to fit the horizontally-mounted LTA 10-290 in the Tiger Doyen it is also likely to offer it with the ZF S6-90 six-speed gearbox for all manual transmission versions.

Three Royal Tigers are already running in the UK with LTA 10-290 engines fitted, although Commercial Motor understands that they are vertically-mounted units, which have been installed by operators.

While Leyland says it is looking at the possibility of fitting the LTA 10-290 engine in its Royal Tiger, it claims that it has no plans to use the recently-introduced Cummins C Series engine, used by Dennis in its Javelin chassis.

D Perth-based bus company Stagecoach has placed an order for 30 new Leyland Olympian doubledeckers with Walter Alexander bodywork in a deal worth some 22.4 million.

The vehicles are to be delivered by next August and will be used by the group's operations in England. Stagecoach is rapidly becoming one of the largest independent operators in Europe following its recent acquisition of former NBC subsidiaries Hampshire Bus and Cumberland Motor Services. It is also being tipped as the buyer for United Counties.
