Journalists are constantly being accused of knowing very little about a great deal, being theorists rather than practical men and unable to practise when they preach, but not at CM. The latest proof comes from an experience Johnny Johnson had at the Commercial Motor Show.
Johnny, as you will know, is one of our management writers and he went on to the Howard Packham stand to try his hand in a vehicle-routing competition. The prize was an attractive bottle of whisky and all he had to do was to find the most economical route for a vehicle. That meant, of course, that the deliveries had to be made without the vehicle retracing any part of the route, and Johnny Johnson mapped out the perfect route_ Of course, since costing is one of his specialist subjects, this is no more than you would have expected and, as he wryly put it, it proves that costing is not such a dry subject as we might be led to believe. The only question that remains is, will he be able to cover a route once he has consumed the prize?
