New Trophy for Safety Features

AT the premiere showing of a new film about brake linings the sales director of Small and Parkes Ltd., Mr.

George Colson, announced that his com pany, the makers of Don brake linings, would be donating a trophy to be awarded annually to the person or company responsible for the development of the best safety feature included on a production vehicle.

The film, called "Braking Point ", will be available to Don distributors and deals mainly with the methods of manufacture, quality-control and testing of the company's products. Emphasis is placed on the increasing need for the right sort of equipment to be fitted on vehicles and maintained in the right condition. The film is well made and produced and the commentary is excellent.

With some rather pointed scenes it shows how the company itself contributes

to road safety tj-trough its constant search for better braking materials; it also shows how disaster can easily occur to those not conversant with braking requirements.

Awarded by a completely independent panel of judges, the trophy, it is hoped, will become one that-will be keenly competed for and consequently stimulate manufacturers and designers towards greater efforts in the direction of safety devices.

Appointed to the panel so far are Prof. W. Gissane, road injuries research group at the Birmingham Accident Hospital; Mr. H. D. Fawell, deputy chief mechanical engineer, Ministry of Transport; Mr.

R. Gresham Cooke, MP; Mr. G. A. H. , Cardwell. chief engineer, BRS; Mr. S. C. Vince, chief engineer. BET; Mr. W. L. Mather. president of the Manchester Chamber of Commerce; Mr. Alan Baker, editor of Automotive Design Engineering, and Sir John Whitmore. European saloon car racing champion. 1965.

Two more members have been invited to join the panel, but they have not yet been officially accepted. "
