YODEL’S RESTRUCTURE plan has kicked off, and it includes a shift to owner-drivers and subbies from full-time employees, CM reveals.
Speaking exclusively to CM, Yodel chief executive Jonathan Smith confirms the following hubs, which were all acquired from DHL Domestic, will shut by the end of 2012: Bristol; Hams Hall, Warwickshire; Leeds and Manchester. He says consultations have started over proposals to axe up to 60 of its 120 depots (CM 28 April). The parcel carrier was formed after the DHL Domestic business and HDNL merged in January 2010. “We’re integrating the businesses and we can’t have them running as two separate networks. It’s too expensive,” Smith says.
He also reveals that the firm is looking to move to a driver model of local couriers and owner-drivers because they are more flexible than full-time Yodel drivers.
