• Like other vehicles in our survey, our 0813 came with built-in tyre defects—or to be precise two, for there was a nail in the rear offside tyre, and a small piece of metal which were causing a slow loss of air, and considering the rust on the nail, and the depth to which it had imbodieded itself in the tread, we reckon it came with it.
Although SVH trucks are covered for mechanical defects by Mondial this does not include tyres, so we had to call Stormont for advice. They gave us the names of three major tyre companies and told us to put the repair on Stormont's account.
We finally got through to National Tyres' Guildford branch, whose fitter turned up some 90 minutes after our initial call and replaced the tyre in about 30 minutes. The story does not end there, however, for it was clear that most of the 0813's tyre pressures were below the correct setting and one of the drive axle tyres was virtually flat. It was returned to SVH at Tonbridge with correct tyre pressures, but how long will it be before anybody checks them again?
