Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The National Freight Consortium's hitherto-troubled Lynx parcels business is recovering and may be in the black later this year.

According to NFC's half-year results, Lynx lost only 20.9 million in the six months to 19 March, compared with a million loss in the same period last year. NFC chief executive John Mather says that Lynx is doing well and has excellent prospects. Its progress is being obscured, he says, by the problem of incorporating Scottish Parcels into the operation ". . . but we are hoping that it will be in the black by the end of the year".

Lynx's is one of the few results which do not sparkle in this set of results. The NFC group as a whole showed a 22% increase in turnover for the six months, with a 40% increase in operating profit and a 62% increase in pre-tax profit to ,E19.8 million, after profitsharing of £3.6 million. The chilled storage company Tempco Union is having troubles due to the running-down of European food stocks, but the distribution division is doing well. NFC chairman Sir Peter Thompson says that the group's latest acquisition — Allied Van Lines, which cost US $100 million in February this year — has already started contributing healthy profits, even though it will take some time to integrate it with the worldwide Pickfords removals operation.
