AAs from July 25 1961 the rate of fuel tax a gallon was 33d. which was increased to 39d. on November 23 1964.
On July 20 1966 a 10 per cent surcharge was imposed which strictly speaking added 3.9d. but for practical purposes it was reckoned at 4d. when retail purchases were made at the pump.
In the Budget provisions announced in April this year, however, a slight adjustment was made so that the current rate of tax per gallon on fuel used for motor vehicles is now officially 43d.
